Clams at Makogai

On Makogai Island ( 30 km to the north east of Levuka) is a breeding station for giant clams. Some clam species are threatened in Fiji due to over fishing so there are successful efforts undertaken by Fiji Fisheries to breed and reintroduce clams to Fiji reefs.
Process: parent clams are set in holding tanks, spawning will be introduced with a hormone injection, after a few days tiny clams settle in the bottom of tank, transfer into larger tanks later then into the ocean to repopulate the reefs.

Clams are injected with Serotonin which will release pheromones and cause spawning in clams within proximity in about 30 min after injection.
