Travel by car or bus from Lijiang toward Shangri-La. Stop mid-way for a breathtaking day hike along Tiger Leaping Gorge, one of the deepest gorges in the world. Continue driving up into the Tibetan Plateau to Shangri-La (3,200m altitude).

Nov 1 (Day 8): Shangri-La Monasteries

Spend a slow day acclimatizing to the altitude. Visit the majestic Ganden Sumtseling Monastery (often called the “Little Potala Palace”) and spin the giant prayer wheel in Dukezong Old Town.

Travel Day: Thanks to the modern rail expansions, you can take a high-speed train from Shangri-La back down through Kunming, directly onto the China-Laos Railway line into Xishuangbanna (Jinghong station). The landscape shifts drastically from alpine peaks to palm trees and rubber plantations.

Nov 4 (Day 11): Jinghong Cultural Sites

Explore Jinghong city. Visit Manting Imperial Garden and the neighboring Zongfo Buddhist Temple (showcasing Theravada Buddhism, which is distinct from the rest of China).

At night, dive into the bustling Gaozhuang Starlight Night Market next to the Mekong River to taste Dai-style barbecued foods and tropical fruits.

Nov 5 (Day 12): Tropical Botanical Garden

Take a day trip to the massive Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (Menglun), home to thousands of rare exotic plants and rainforest canopies.

Visit Wild Elephant Valley (if you’re lucky, you can glimpse China’s last remaining wild Asian elephants from the elevated boardwalks). Later, visit an authentic Dai Ethnic Park village to see traditional stilt houses.

Use these days to unwind. Head out to Menghai County—the birthplace of Pu’er tea—to hike through ancient tea plantations, participate in a traditional tea roasting workshop, and experience the distinct cultures of the Jinuo or Hani minorities.

Leg 3: Return Rail Journey to Shenzhen

Nov 11 (Day 18): Train from Xishuangbanna to Kunming

Board a high-speed train back up to Kunming (approx. 3.5 hours).

Spend a few extra days in Kunming. Take a day trip to Jiuxiang Caves or hike up Western Hills (Xishan) for panoramic views over Dianchi Lake. Use this time to rest before your long train journey east.

Catch the morning high-speed bullet train from Kunming South station directly to Shenzhen North station. The journey takes about 7 hours and cuts smoothly across Guizhou and Guangdong provinces. Arrive in Shenzhen by late afternoon/evening.
