Many animal species in Fiji have not yet been described or have not even been discovered yet. Is this one of them?
Fijian Blue Blind Snake???
Ovalau, 20 March 2023
Found in my backyard while gardening.
This small, non-venomous, ground-dwelling blindsnake is only about 12 cm long.
If you don’t look closely, you’ll think it’s a blue earthworm. It must be super rare because it’s my first time seeing it. I was digging in the ground and then happened to see it. It doesn’t seem to like light because it tried to bury itself in the humus. To photograph it, I had to put it in a container. When I released it, it immediately buried itself again.
The Brahminy Blind Snake (Indotyphlops braminus) is often referred to as a “Fiji blind snake” because it has been introduced and established in Fiji, as well as in many other tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. It’s a ubiquitous, non-native species.
