Caqalai

Caqalai Island ( say: thung-gulie ) is a 14-acre coral island south of Ovalau in a sea area known as Moturiki Passage. Caqalai Backpacker Hostel is run by the Methodist Church of Fiji.

It is located on the eastern side of Fiji’s main island Viti Levu, well off the main tourist track. Its the perfect place for all those that want to get away from it all and experience real laid back Fiji Island live.

Accommodation on Caqalai

is in Fijian Bures, thatched huts built in a traditional local way. They are right a the beach, only a stone’s throw from the clear waters of the Pacific. There are 12 single bures and 8 double bures. Bures are basic but comfortable in their own way. Beds have mosquito nets, linens are provided. The dormitory is also right next to the beach, it sleeps a max of 12 people in there. Facilities are shared. Toilets are flush, showers are fed by rainwater catchments.

Camping: Is available, please bring your own tent and sleeping bag.

Things to do

White-sandy beaches surround the island. At low tide, walk out on the tidal flat and explore the sea life.

Snorkel just off the beach, beach comb, read a book, play volleyball against the locals, go fishing, just experience island life.

Visit Levuka, the old capital, for a day trip or take a hike on Ovalau with Epi to the village of Lovoni, which is located in the caldera of the Ovalau volcano.

After dinner, join the staff around the Kawa bowl (Tanoa) and listen to their Fijian songs, or sit around a bonfire at the beach with friends and watch the stars in a clear sky……

On Sundays, join the locals on a trip to Niubasaga, visit the church, and enjoy Fijian village hospitality.

Food

Rates include food: breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner.
Locally available food such as fresh fish, chicken, pork, dalo, cassava, rice, etc., is served. Vegetarian meals are available. On Sundays, often a special meal, ‘Lovo’ is served. This is a traditional way of preparing food in an earth oven. It’s delicious.
A small shop sells items such as soap, cigarettes, soft drinks, water, and snacks.

There is no alcohol sold on the island but you are welcome to bring your own.

Getting there

Boat from Levuka to Caqalai. The fare is F$ 30 per person each way.
Boat from Viti Levu (mainland) to Caqalai. Fare is F$30 per person each way.
The boat from Viti Levu departs from Waidalice Bridge a few kilometers past Nausori.
Boat Transports is usually daily or will be arranged on demand. Please note that boat trips can depend on weather and tidal conditions. Please contact us for details.

Rates are per person, incl. 3 meals.
