| Coastal Loop East > | South West Loop | Offbeat China | Shanghai to Shenzhen | Yunnan to Shenzhen |
| ————— | —————— | Chongqing to Guangzhou | Guizhou | Kunming Xishuangbanna |
Guizhou is China’s ultimate “underrated” province. Because it is entirely dominated by mountains, its historic towns and minority villages were naturally preserved from massive commercial development for decades.
-
Why it is least touristy: While popular with domestic hikers, it receives a fraction of the mass commercial tourism seen in Yunnan or Hunan. You can walk into a thousand-house minority village and see people living their genuine daily lives rather than performing for a stage.
-
Why it is easy to travel: Guizhou has one of the best high-speed rail networks in the world. Almost every major scenic area, ethnic mountain valley, and ancient town has its own high-speed bullet train station. Even better, it sits directly on the high-speed rail line between Kunming and Shenzhen, making your transit completely seamless.
The “Low-Touristy / High-Ease” Guizhou Stopover Route
If you swap Leg 2 (Xishuangbanna) for Guizhou on your way to Shenzhen, here is the perfect 6-day loop:
-
Day 1: Train from Kunming to Anshun (1.5 hours)
-
Visit Huangguoshu Waterfall, China’s largest and most famous waterfall. It has a great boardwalk system and is extremely easy to navigate.
-
-
Day 2: Train to Zhenyuan Ancient Town (2.5 hours)
-
This is the “Dali/Lijiang” alternative. It is a stunning old town built along a winding river gorge. Unlike Lijiang, there are no aggressive bars or massive tour crowds—just locals fishing, quiet riverside cafes, and beautiful stone architecture.
-
-
Day 3: Train to Congjiang / Kaili (1 hour)
-
Head into the heart of the Dong and Miao minority territories. Stay in Zhaoxing Dong Village or Langde Miao Village. Zhaoxing is a stunning wooden village nestled in a green valley with five grand drum towers. It feels ancient, peaceful, and entirely magical at night.
-
-
Day 4: The Rice Terraces & Slow Living
-
Walk through the Jiabang Rice Terraces or enjoy a slow day in the village learning traditional indigo fabric dyeing or listening to the Dong people’s famous polyphonic choir singing (UNESCO heritage).
-
-
Day 5: High-Speed Train directly to Shenzhen (4.5 hours)
-
Board the bullet train right from Congjiang or Guiyang station and arrive smoothly at Shenzhen North station by afternoon.
-
The Verdict
Guizhou gives you the dramatic nature of Lijiang, the relaxing, authentic old-town feel of Dali, and the rich, vibrant minority street-culture of Xishuangbanna, but skips the overwhelming tourist crowds while keeping your transit strictly limited to fast, modern trains.
